There are as many as 28 species of Silverfish in Australia. They are small, soft insects without wings, they have a flat body which is covered in overlapping scales. They are about half inch long.
Silverfish can move extremely quickly when disturbed and prefer damp, moderate temperature places such as basements, laundry rooms and under sinks. Occasionally you can find them in bath tubs, seeking food or moisture.
Silverfish cause damage in homes by eating foods and other materials that are high in protein, sugar or starch. They will almost anything, such as, dried beef, flour, starch, paper, gum, glue, cotton, linen, rayon, silk, sugar, molds, breakfast cereals, wall paper paste, books and papers.
In their natural habitat they live under bark, in soil, amongst leaf litter and debris on the ground.
What you can do:
Control of silverfish is usually achieved by storing books, paper and linen in well lit and ventilated areas. Camphor blocks may prove useful.
Sources of any undue moisture such as faulty plumbing or condensation that provide the humidity favoured by these pests should be eliminated.
What we will do:
Conduct a thorough inspection of the premises both internally and externally.
A Silverfish Control Program will include:
A liquid spray to accessible areas
A dusting to accessible areas
A dusting to roof void and wall cavities
Silverfish are extremely difficult to control, particularly if they have become well established. A number of treatments may need to be carried out.
