Termites are the cause of the greatest economic losses of timber in service in Australia.
1 in every 3 homes is attacked by termites at some stage in its life. Latest figures suggest that the annual cost of termite infestation in Australia now exceeds one billion dollars.
Australia’s subterranean termites are the most destructive timber pests in the world.
It can take as little as 3 months for a termite colony to severely damage almost all the timber in a home.
Despite what many people believe termites are NOT “white ants”. In fact they are not even related to ants.
Termites cause more damage to homes than flood, fire and storms put together. And can cost $100,000 or more to fix.
There is no household insurance that covers you for termite damage.
There are hundreds of termite species in Australia but only a few cause economic damage.
The most common species found in Australia Coptotermes acinaciformis is the most destructive termite species in the world.
Termites can work their way into a house from under the floor, up the wall cavity, alongside plumbing penetrations or through construction joints in the concrete.
One termite colony can hold up to 1 million termites. The individual members include the Queen, King, Workers and Soldiers. The Queen can lay over 2000 eggs per day and can live up to 40 years.
They can exploit food sources over as much as one hectare.
Most termite damage is invisible because they eat from the inside of the timber.
The bottom line is that termites are a constant threat to your property. Without an effective prevention program your home is exposed to potential termite damage which could remain unnoticed until it becomes a serious and costly problem.
Australian Standard AS3660.2-2000 recommends the installation of a Termite Management System-even in those houses that show no evidence of termites or termite damage.
How Termites attack your home
The most destructive species live in large underground nests (subterranean) containing several million timber destroying insects. The problem arises when a nest matures near your home. Your home provides natural shelter and a food source for the termites. The gallery system of a single colony may exploit food sources over as much as one hectare, with individual galleries extending up to 50 metres to enter your home, where there is a smorgasbord of timber to feast upon. Even concrete slabs do not act as a barrier; they can penetrate through cracks in the slab to gain access to your home. They even build mud tubes to gain access to above ground timbers. In rare cases termites may create their nest in the cavity wall of the property without making ground contact. In these cases it may be impossible to determine their presence until extensive timber damage occurs.
Termites have been a natural part of the ecosystem on earth for more than 150 million years. They have an important role in recycling rotten timber in the forest and returning nutrients to the soil.
Although commonly called a ‘white ant’, they are in fact not ants are most closely related to cockroaches.
Australia has approximately 300 species of termites and of these only about 15 attack timber “in service”. The balance are mainly grass feeders.
Generally the amount of termite activity, and therefore damage, increases the further north in Australia you go, with soil type also having an important influence on termite distribution.
Termites can be roughly divided into 3 groups: dampwood, drywood and subterranean.
Dampwood termites generally feed on moist rotten logs on the forest floor and rarely cause a nuisance to humans.Drywood termites live in small pockets in the dead wood of trees and timber in houses. They obtain their moisture from the timber they eat and require no contact with the soil.
Subterranean termites are generally ground-dwelling and require soil contact or some external source of moisture. These cause, by far the most damage to timber in service in Australia.
Subterranean termites remain within a closed system of galleries where they are protected from predators, the heat, light and lack of humidity in the outside environment.
They forage for food by means of underground galleries or covered runways which extend from the central nest to food sources above or below ground. The gallery system of a single colony may exploit food sources over as much as one hectare, with individual galleries extending for up to 50 metres.
Termites are social insects in that they live and work together in large colonies, with each individual having a specific task to perform to enable the colony to function. These tasks can be divided into three main roles: working, protecting and reproducing.
Each task falls to different types (castes) of termite: worker, soldier and reproductive.
The workers are the ones who do all the damage. They are wingless, blind and sterile and are responsible for foraging for food, constructing tunnels, building the nest and feeding other members of the colony. They feed on wood and other cellulose materials. Cellulose is digested by intestinal protozoa or bacteria, which also contain essential amounts of nitrogen. Often termites dispose of excess, dead and diseased members of the colony by cannibalism, thereby conserving nitrogen.
As they feed they may hollow out timbers and often move from one area to another by constructing small tunnels made from a mud-like combination of faeces and saliva-“mudding”.
After feeding foraging workers return to the nest full of chewed wood. The cellulose in the wood is digested by microorganisms in the gut. The digested cellulose is passed around to feed the other termites through a process known as trophallaxis.
The soldiers are distinguished from other castes by their heads, which are heavily armoured and coloured. They too are wingless, sterile and blind. Because their mandibles are so modified or specialised, soldiers must be fed by the workers. The primary function of the soldier is to defend the colony against predators such as ants. The soldier caste is the most distinctive and is used to identify a particular species.
The reproductive or alate castes are the potential kings and queens of new colonies. They possess eyes, functional reproductive systems and wings. They normally swarm at dusk during the warmer months when humidity levels in the nest and atmosphere are about equal. After swarming the alates break off their wings and after a brief courtship, begin building a new colony. The original mating pair become the new king and queen. The king does not change shape during this phase, however the queen’s abdomen becomes enormously enlarged until she is completely immobile, becoming an egg-laying machine and, in some species, capable of laying up to 2000 eggs a day.
As mentioned above there are about 15 species of subterranean termites which commonly attack timber in service throughout Australia with the most destructive being Coptotermes, Nasutitermes, Mastotermes darwiniensis, Schedorhinotermes and Heterotermes.
Coptotermes acinaciformis
· subterranean type
· occurring Australia wide
· cause more damage to property than any other species.
· some species will form sub nests within buildings
· will attack many items other than wood in their search for cellulose materials.
Nasutitermes
· mound/arboreal type nests
· occurring Australia wide
· mainly attack hardwood such as that found in fences and timber decking.
Mastotermes darwiniensis
· subterranean type
· occurring north of Tropic of Capricorn
· sub colonies ‘bud off’ from primary colony forming a network of interconnecting sub-colonies which can devastate buildings, bridges, poles, trees etc within short timeframes.
Microcerotermes
· mound/arboreal type nests
· occurring Australia wide
· colonies are readily exposed causing damage to deteriorated timber in contact with the ground
Schedorhinotermes
· They build nests in places such as old tree trumps, in timber buried in the ground, in filled patios and under fireplaces.
· Occurring Australia wide
· This genus has major and minor soldiers. Major soldiers appear once nest is well established.
Heterotermes
· Occurring throughout Australia south of the Tropic of Capricorn
· Species of this genus form small colonies adjacent to other termite species
· They are generally considered to do little damage to timber in service restricting their attention to weathered timber fences decking and posts.
What YOU can do to reduce the risk of a Termite infestation…
Have your property inspected by a licensed termite inspector at least every 12 months. Always follow the recommendations.
It is essential that current a termite management system is in place at all times.
Vegetation. General vegetation around foundation areas should be managed so that inspection zones and airflow are not impeded. Planting of trees and shrubs near buildings should be avoided to limit root intrusion and resulting concealed termite entry points.
Gardens. The building of gardens may allow concealed termite entry points. They should not be planted against the perimeter of the building or at a minimum should be below inspection zones.
Attachments to buildings-such as downpipes, fences, service conduits and service pipes should have a nominal gap to allow clear and uninterrupted visual inspection across the inspection zone. Structures such as steps, verandahs, porches, access ramps, carports, trellises, decks, HWS, air conditioners etc which are not protected by a treated zone should be separated from the building by a gap of at least 25mm.
Do not store cellulose based materials such as timber under your house in contact with the ground
Do not cover weep holes or slab edges if possible. This can allow concealed termite entry.
Fix any leaking taps, showers or pipes, termites are attracted to moisture.
Fix any subfloor ventilation problems, again termites are attracted to moisture/dampness.
Fix any drainage problems. Divert surface and ground water away from the building with drainage systems.
Remove all stumps from the gardens and surrounds. These provide a food source and ideal nesting site.
Install metal stirrups where timber posts are in direct contact with ground
Avoid the build-up of soil against the exterior of buildings which can allow concealed termite entry.
Ensure external plumbing such as gutters, downpipes and drains do not overflow causing excessive moisture near buildings.
Never store firewood on the ground adjacent to a building.
Ensure that termite shielding (ant caps) are not damaged or breached in any way.
Do not use untreated timbers to form garden beds or retaining walls
Irrigations systems are to be kept as far away from the external walls of the premises as possible. Excessive watering should be avoided.
Air-conditioning or hot water system overflows should be directed either further away from the property or into a drain. .
Reduce the amount of inaccessible areas-cut trapdoors and entry points.
When building or renovating use construction techniques that isolate the timber components of the house from contact with the soil. This can be achieved by installing physical barriers or treated zones. Design features may also be incorporated to assist in preventing termites from invading the building.
What you should do if you discover termites
If you find any evidence of termites, damaged timbers or mud workings then immediately contact us.
Don’t panic-they have probably been there a while so a few more days will make little difference.
Do not disturb the termites and/or workings in any way-this will enable us to more effectively treat your termite problem.
